Life path

Inge VAN ROMPAEY

Born in Ghent, Belgium in 1973, Inge Van Rompaey studied classical guitar at the National Music School of Flanders from the age of 6 to 18. When she was 14, she bought her first electric guitar. She also started to teach guitar to other pupils at her college.

At 20 years young she left Belgium and travelled by bicycle with Matthew Watkins with whom she formed the duo Ail Fionn  (mandolin/saz) in 1995 while in Ireland. Their music is inspired by traditional music and combined with improvisation. Within a couple of years they had changed their bikes for a donkey and a mule and continue travelling, eventually joining forces with the nomadic Donga Dance Band  in Cornwall (UK).

In 2000 Inge arrived in Brittany (France), a new opportunity for exchanging culture and music. Over the next three years she travelled across France from north to south, staging musical animations with the association «Bechamel» in schools, elderly people's homes and centres for the handicapped.

During the years of festivals, concerts, street theatre, pub sessions and other musical exchanges and meetings, she learned the accordion, mandolin and clarinet. Inge was inspired to learn the fiddle after meeting the Russian group Dobranoch.

Than she settled in the Hautes Pyrenees in France and began her career as a music teacher, in ADAC (Association for the Develpment of the Arts in the Comminges), in the music school in Arné and in Saint Laurent de Neste. Since then, a big part of her life has been dedicated to teaching guitar (classical, acoustic and electric), fiddle, mandolin and accordion to pupils from 6 to 99 years young.

In 2004 she followed a degree course in music therapy with AMBX in Bordeaux.

In 2005 Inge joined the group «Les Violons de Garonne»  and in this way discovered Occitan music and found much pleasure playing with fourteen fiddles !

In 2006 the group Youshka was created, an all-female acoustic trio with Inge Van Rompaey , Marie Hulsens  and Dona Bastin. Alongside this they created the association «Léz’arpèges» and organised events involving Occitan music, such as the « Ça Tend Bal ». At each of these she has taught workshops for all kinds of musicians at all levels and ages with a variety of instruments and each time they have then played all together for the opening of the Bal.

Inge also co-created three musical shows for children with Véronique Piat, founder of the association «Créagire» .

From 2005 to 2010 she followed several courses at the Conservatoire of Tarbes:

- a course in written and improvised music with an introduction to soundpainting under the direction of Pierre Dayraud  who formed the group «Maximal Orchestra».

- a degree in classical guitar with Denis Abate

- a degree in traditional music (fiddle), under the direction of Pascal Caumont  and Xavier Vidal

She is also certified in the transmission of Occitan culture (dance, music and singing) in nursery and primary schools.

These days Inge is approaching the completion of the State Certificate in Occitan traditional music (fiddle) at the Superior Institute of Arts of Toulouse and she is part of the Duo Inge-Sylvain.

After years of teaching music in schools, workshops, etc. she decided to create her own music school «Musique à Fond»

There are lessons in :

- classical, acoustic and electric guitar in the styles of rock, blues, classical, folk, fingerstyle, fingerpicking, improvisation, composition, etc. according to the wishes of students.

- fiddle (Breton, Occitan, etc.) and violin

- musical awareness for small children from three years old.
